The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will coalesce data privacy legislation from the EU28 into one regulation that goes into effect on May 25, 2018. One of the core tenants of GDPR is privacy by design, providing consumers with greater rights than ever before including the right to be forgotten, data minimisation and pseudonmynisation.
Along with GDPR’s requirements comes the potential for massive fines which are enforceable not just in the EU but globally. Transgressors could be subjected to fines of over €20m or 4 percent of worldwide turnover, whichever is greater.
