“What is the difference between device identification [recognition] and device reputation?

You can think of device identification as being ‘What do we see in that device right now?’ What are the attributes that we can discern on that device that make up its unique identity, its unique digital fingerprint? What version of the operating system — and that can be whether it’s an iPhone or an Android mobile, a laptop, or an iPad system — what is the operating system that it’s running? What is the OS version of the browser that’s running? And then any other characteristics, like the number of applications or even the number of fonts. It looks at what that device is right now.

Device reputation, on the other hand, looks at the history of that device. Has that device, over time, been involved in any fraudulent activity? Have any risks occurred around that device? What is the relationship of accounts around that device and what are the other devices that device happens to have relationships with, it’s associated with, through accounts? That’s the difference between identity, looking at the attributes of a device, and the reputation, the history of that device and what we know about its past.”
